EDFRINGE REVIEW: Antigone (Mythography Collective)

Antigone - ★★☆☆☆ - Ponderous

French Institute in Scotland (Venue 168): Fri 1 – Sun 24 Aug 2025
Review by Rebecca Mahar

Review commissioned by, and originally posted on All Edinburgh Theatre, 5 August 2025. Edited by Thom Dibdin.

The Mythography Collective bring their production of the tragedy of Antigone back to the Fringe, with a festival-long run at the French Institute in Scotland.

Using an English-language version of Jean Anoulih’s 1944 play (translated by Jeremy Sams), Mythography describes this production as “urgent and haunting.” Unfortunately, it is neither.

  1. I am sure that those who enjoy the comedic and frivolious side of the Fringe will find this version of Antigone ponderous. Go deeper and there is plenty to ponder. If a mark of a good play is that it provokes great thought and fine conversation, then this is one to see.

Antigone herself is a tortured soul .Creon’s advocacy and persuasion is so effective, that , in this version, you are are left pondering whether she is deeply thrawn, narcissistic, or suffering from mental illness.

Creon is tormented by a dilemma of upholding, or abandoning, the rule of law to save his niece, and anyone in the audience can reach around the world for an up to the minute geopolitical analogue of this dilemma .

Whether it is about the mental battles faced by many young people , the rule, or abuse of law to manage populism or polarity in society, there is so much to ponder.

For some balance have a look at the 5 star review dated 3rd August on northwestend.com

Go and decide for yourself whether this is ponderous, or something to ponder . You won’t be disappointed .
